
A lock that resists in the middle of summer is not necessarily faulty. Thermal expansion alters the dimensions of the frame, the door, and the metal parts by a few tenths of a millimeter, enough for a key to become hard to turn or for a latch to refuse to engage in the strike plate. Understanding the mechanism at play allows for intervention in the right place, without worsening the situation.
Diagnosis before intervention: distinguish a door problem from a cylinder problem
The first step when facing a lock that is difficult to operate in summer is to identify the real source of the blockage. Many homeowners assume that the mechanism is at fault, while the door itself has moved due to the heat.
The most reliable test is to operate the lock with the door open. If the key turns normally in this position, the cylinder and mechanism are functioning. The problem then lies in a misalignment between the door and its frame: the latch is hitting the strike plate because the door has swelled or the hinges have slightly shifted.
If the key is also difficult to turn with the door open, the issue is within the cylinder or the internal mechanism (worn spring, dirty grooves, stuck latch). Lock problems related to heat are rarely resolved in the same way depending on whether one is dealing with misalignment or mechanical wear.
This distinction prevents the unnecessary disassembly of a perfectly functioning cylinder or, conversely, the planing of a door when it is the cylinder that is sticking.

Thermal expansion of wood, metal, and PVC: different reactions depending on the material
Not all materials react the same way to temperature increases. Wood is the most sensitive to combined variations of heat and humidity. It absorbs moisture from the surrounding air, swells, and pushes the door against the frame. This swelling can reach several millimeters on a solid door exposed to the sun.
Metal (steel, aluminum) expands in a more predictable and uniform manner. On a security door, the expansion remains moderate, but it is sometimes enough to misalign the latch with the strike plate. Aluminum expands more than steel at the same temperature.
PVC, on the other hand, softens slightly under high heat. The profiles can deform, especially on dark-colored joinery exposed to direct sunlight. The deformation alters the contact points with the multi-point lock and causes hard spots.
Should you plane a wooden door that swells in summer?
Several troubleshooting guides recommend waiting for a drier period or a change of season before any irreversible operation. The summer swelling of wood is often temporary. If the door returns to its normal play in autumn, planing done in August will create excessive gaps for the rest of the year.
Before planing, priority should be given to adjusting the hinges and the strike plate. An adjustment of a few millimeters on the hinges is often enough to restore alignment without removing material.
Lubrication of the lock cylinder in summer: choosing the right product
Maintaining the cylinder plays a direct role in preventing summer blockages. Heat accelerates the drying out of residual lubricants and promotes the accumulation of dust in the grooves of the cylinder.
Dry lubricants (PTFE, graphite) are preferred for locks exposed to heat. Unlike thick greases, they do not attract dust and do not form a sticky paste that worsens sticking in the medium term. A PTFE spray applied in the keyhole once or twice a year constitutes effective preventive maintenance.
Products to avoid:
- Thick greases like petroleum jelly or mechanical grease, which retain particles and clog the cylinder pins over the weeks
- Classic WD-40 (degreaser, not lubricant), which evaporates quickly and leaves the mechanism without lasting protection
- Cooking or food oil, sometimes suggested as a quick fix, which can go rancid and form a sticky residue inside the cylinder
Application should be done with the key removed: a brief spray in the keyhole, followed by a few insertions and withdrawals of the key to distribute the product on the pins.

Multi-point lock stuck due to heat: specific adjustments
Multi-point locks are more vulnerable to the effects of thermal expansion than single-point models. Each locking point (top, middle, bottom) must align with its respective strike plate. Even a slight misalignment of the door is enough to block one or more latches.
The typical symptom: the key turns partially and then gets stuck before completing the locking cycle. The last locking point, often the top or bottom one, refuses to engage.
Before calling a locksmith, two checks are possible:
- Gently lift the door by the handle while turning the key, to compensate for any sagging of the door that prevents the top latch from reaching its strike plate
- Firmly push the door against the frame during the locking maneuver, to bring the latches closer to their respective housings
- Check that the rollers or wheels of the locking points are not dirty, and clean them with a dry cloth if necessary
Forcing the key in a multi-point lock is the best way to break the transmission mechanism, the linkage that connects the points together. The repair will then cost significantly more than a simple adjustment.
Seasonal prevention: protect locks and joinery before summer
A few actions taken in spring significantly reduce the risk of summer blockages. Prevention combines maintenance of the mechanism and protection of the frame.
On the lock, lubrication with PTFE or graphite forms the basis. On wooden joinery, applying a stain or varnish limits moisture absorption and reduces swelling. Nighttime ventilation stabilizes indoor humidity and decreases the thermo-hygrometric differences that cause the doors to work.
On doors exposed to direct sunlight, an awning or shade reduces surface heating. Dark-colored joinery absorbs more heat: a lighter color limits overheating and the associated expansion.
Checking the hinges and strike plate should be done once a year. A door perfectly aligned in spring tolerates dimensional variations in summer better without the latch hitting the strike plate. This check takes a few minutes and only requires a screwdriver or an Allen key.
